Becomings

In Becoming 2005, I follow the relationship between human bodies, embodiment and environment where water and blood are interlaced as a person’s becoming firstly in the womb then in world .

Two liquids are used in this work; one is red food dye which is representing blood, and the other rainwater representing the environment. These are sucked (using my mouth) into clear hoses and then are woven leaving the edges hanging to emphasise the option of further connection. The space created is both enclosing in and enclosing from the environment as a permeable membrane‑allowing air to flow in and out between the yarns and enable movement. Creating a cocoon, which is metaphorically, at the same time of enclosing a space around the body it allows breathing space for thought to be threaded and then ready to connect through creative response, influenced by the environment it is in.
